Three of the brass handles on my sideboard need replacing but I can’t find any in the correct style. Can you help me to find a company that will copy the existing design?

JH, Barry, Glamorgan.

BRASS FOUNDRY CASTINGS, PO Box 151, Westerham, Kent TN16 1YF, 01959 563863, brasscastings.co.uk will copy just about anything in brass. The advice at the foundry is to select the best of the surviving handles, as any defects would be repeated in the reproduction, and send it to them. They will first conduct a search to see if the same handle has previously been made; the company has a huge archive and if moulds exist, new handles would be less expensive.

If not, a mould will be taken from your handle as the first step in a seven-stage process, which includes forcing molten wax into the mould, encasing the wax object in liquid plaster, which sets around it, melting out the wax and forcing molten metal into the cavity. The plaster is then broken away and the cast object is hand-polished. This method of casting will show a shrinkage of three to five per cent. On receipt of your handle, a quotation will be given for the new pieces.
